La Londe-les-Maures, the origin of the name

The commune of La Londe-les-Maures owes its name to Antoine Lemonnier, 'sieur de la Londe' and originally from Normandy. In 1678, he acquired large plots of land in the current territory of the municipality and had the 'Château de La Londe' built there, which passed its name on to the future village. A name well suited to the very wooded configuration of the commune since 'londe' meant 'grove, wood' in the old Norman dialect. 'Les Maures' was added later to distinguish the village from its namesakes.
