The Petit Palais entrance gate

The ideas of the architect Charles Girault (1851-1933) influenced his friend Henri Deglane, the architect chosen to build the Grand Palais. Girault invested himself totally in the construction of the Petit Palais, located on the other side of the avenue, for which he was the sole architect. His plans mixed the classical and Art-Nouveau styles and he was one of the first to use reinforced concrete. He himself designed the scrolls of the wrought iron entrance gate (photo), as well as the banisters of the corner staircases. In 1902, the Petit Palais was converted into a Fine Arts Museum to house the rich collections of the City of Paris.
