The Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque – also known as the Qatar State Grand Mosque – is located in the capital city of Doha in the Jubailat district. Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab bin Sulayman al-Tamimi (1703-1792) was a reformist scholar imam and preacher from the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. This Sunni Muslim theologian is the founder of Wahhabism – a purist interpretation of Islam prevalent in Qatar and Saudi Arabia – whose followers are known as the Salafists. Inaugurated in 2011, this large mosque is inspired by the style of the Al Qebeb Mosque, created in 1878 in memory of his father by Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammad Al Thani (1825-1913) – the founder of the State of Qatar.
