The Leucate pond is part of the Salses-Leucate lagoon, located north of Perpignan. The Mediterranean lagoons began to form more than 20 000 years ago. The sea level, which was then 328 feet (100 m) below today’s, gradually rose due to global warming. Following that process, a path of sand separated the sea from the brackish waters. Lagoon complexes cover 510 000 sq. mi (130 000 ha) in France, out of which 45% are located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
