Forests cover 51% of the territory of the South Region, or about 1.6 million hectares, and increase by 9,500 hectares each year. They are at the heart of a triple environmental, social and economic issue. With the highest forest area and an afforestation rate of 67%, the Var department ranks first ahead of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Alpes-Maritimes.
