The Chaudefour national forest is located on the rugged slopes of the Sancy massif between 3,838 and 6,069 feet (1,170-1,850 metres) above sea level. The wooded part only covers 174 hectares of the total 624 hectares and occupies the steep slopes of the Chaudefour cirque and valley below 5,249 feet (1,600 metres). The rest – of which around 120 hectares are located on the territory of the Chastreix-Sancy National Nature Reserve – is made up of non-forest high altitude areas.
