Back in the days of the canal’s construction, the freeboards held no plantations apart from willow cuttings intended to consolidate the banks. It’s from the 18th century that the canal’s administrators decide to cultivate these spaces by planting oaks, ashes, mulberry trees etc. With the 19th century begin the days of the plane trees which have since become an emblematic view of the ‘Canal du Midi’. The plant heritage of the canal is a true lung of nature for its surroundings.
