The Golden Arrow

Inaugurated in September 1926, the “Flèche d’Or” (Golden Arrow) linked Paris-Gare du Nord to London-Victoria Station via Calais and Dover every day. This prestigious train was made up of first class Pullman lounge cars in chocolate and cream colour. The ship “Canterbury” was built in 1929 just for the passengers of this train. The Golden Arrow, pulled by a 231 Pacific steam locomotive designed by engineer André Chapelon for the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord, was the fastest train of its time, averaging 68 mph (110 km/h) over a distance of about 173 miles (280 km).
