Before the creation of Serre-Ponçon lake, the Durance - 55% of the water of which comes from melting snow - linked the slopes of the mountains of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. A tributary of the Rhône, it was one of the most powerful torrential rivers in France. Its capricious hydrology was marked by devastating floods and seasonal shortages.
