With almost 30,000 inhabitants (2019), Carpentras is the second-most populous city in the Vaucluse department behind Avignon (91,143 inhabitants) and ahead of Orange (28,772 inhabitants). The modern town has largely overflowed the ramparts built by order of Pope Innocent VI between 1357 and 1392 to protect the Comtadine city from looting. Different neighborhoods (Les Amandiers, Pous du plan, Bois de l'ubac, Cité du parc, etc.) have developed beyond the historic center, and the economic site of Carpensud hosts more than 150 companies on 330 acres (133 ha) south of the city.
