The former capital of Comtat Venaissin (1274–1791), Carpentras is a small plain town located 15.5 miles (25 km) northeast of Avignon in the Vaucluse department. It extends south of Mont Ventoux, west of the Vaucluse mountains, east of the Rhône, and north of the Durance. The sub-prefecture and second city in the department after Avignon and ahead of Orange, Carpentras had almost 30,000 inhabitants in 2018.
