La Demoiselle is considered to be the first light aircraft (132 lbs/ 60 kg) in aeronautics, created by the Brazilian engineer Alberto Santos-Dumont. Its structure is in bamboo and the fir wings are covered with varnished silk canvas. It flew for the first time in 1907 but quickly acquired a reputation as a killer of men because of its fragile landing gear. Sick, Santos Dumont cedes his rights to Clément-Bayard who will manufacture a few models in series (types 21 and 22) with different engines.
