The Catholic church in Bailly-le-Franc, in the Aube region, is dedicated to the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix (Exaltation of the Holy Cross). In 326, Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I, went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. According to tradition, the future saint climbed Golgotha and discovered the remains of the true Cross. From 335 onwards, Constantine had the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre built on the site of Calvary and the tomb of Christ. Dedicated to the Resurrection, the basilica with the relics of the Cross became a very important place of pilgrimage from the 4th century. Christians celebrate the Holy Cross on 14 September.
