The pink color, more intense on the wings, of the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), is due to the action of the carotene pigments contained in the food that it ingests in the wild in its natural environment of lagoons and brackish ponds. In captivity and poor conditions, the flamingo may lose its color and turn back to gray like the juveniles of the species. Such transformation proves that the greater flamingo does not produce this dye, coming from its diet, by itself.
