The Meije range is made up of three main peaks : the Grand Pic or Pic Occidental, the Doigt de Dieu or Pic Central and the Meije Orientale. The Doigt de Dieu (13,034 ft / 3,973 m), leaning towards the sky, was conquered by William Auguste Brevoort Coolidge in 1870 through the Tabuchet glacier. He then thought that it constituted the highest peak of La Meije. The Grand Pic, which exceeds it by about 32 ft (10 m), was only climbed seven years later on August 16, 1877, by Pierre Gaspard and Baron Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau. It was the last peak in the Alps to be conquered.
