The original design of the 'Fort des Salettes'
The 'Fort des Salettes' was designed by Vauban in 1692 to occupy a plateau accessible from the 'Champ de Mars' which dangerously dominated the city of Briançon. Its realization was directed by the engineer Tardif from 1709 to 1712. The original structure - before its expansion between 1845 and 1850 - is a redoubt inspired by the medieval towers of mountainous terrain and intended to bar the access to the dominant positions.
