The building housing the Tellure mining park stands on an underground mine from the Middle Ages. The discovery of its silver vein in 1549 caused a silver fever throughout the region. The Saint-Jean Engelsbourg mine holds the Saint-Jean column, the largest underground cavity in the Vosges mountains. 393 ft high (120 m), it was entirely scattered with galleries carved by the miners. The most important silver vein, 328 ft long (100 m), was discovered there and quickly emptied.
