The medieval city of Carcassonne during the Middle Ages
0
0
In the Middle Ages, the troops of Saint-Louis conquer Carcassonne. The King of France orders the expulsion of the inhabitants of the city to the Ville Basse - the Bastide Saint-Louis. The Ville Haute (high city) becomes the seneschals’ headquarters of the Capetian administration. They reigned on Carcassonne and its surroundings. It was at this time that Saint-Louis decided to double the rampart line of the city. He added a second line of defense to the pre-existing Gallo-Roman fortifications.
