The town of Collioure, on the Côte Vermeille (Vermillion Coast), is known as the cradle of Fauvism. This artistic movement of the early 20th century was led by artists like Henri Matisse and André Derain, who arrived in the city during the summer of 1905. Their arrival allowed Collioure to establish its international reputation as the Cité des Peintres (Painters' City). The colors of the town, its remarkable light, and the authenticity of its small, typically Catalan fishing port have inspired the creation of major works such as The Open Window by Matisse or Boats in Collioure by Derain. Subsequently, many artists such as Picasso and Braque followed in the footsteps of these pioneers and traveled to discover the coastal town of the Pyrénées-Orientales.
