The citadel which dominates Sisteron in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a listed historical monument whose architectural elements extend over ten hectares and bear witness to eight centuries of history. To the 13th century dungeon and rampart walk was added the tiering of bastioned enclosures in the 16th century and Vauban's powder magazine in 1692. Demilitarized in 1920, the citadel was bombed in August 1944 before being restored and transformed into a museum.
