Chivalry in the Middle Ages

At the opposite of our daily way of life, the Middle Ages have always aroused a form of fascination. Military life was then divided between the danger of invasions, quarrels among lords, and the codes of honor of chivalry. Knights of the Middle Ages were soldiers wealthy enough to own a horse, sword, and armor. They were under the orders of a lord who lodged them. In return, they followed him on his military expeditions. Louis XIV, in 1691, created an office of adviser to the king, Chevalier d'honneur (knight of honor). A similar institution was established in January 1695 at the Superior Council of Alsace in Brisach.
