The timber frame of the Great Tower

The ‘Grosse Tour’ (Great Tower) of Sedan Castle is remarkable for its architecture. Built at the request of Lord Jean de La Marck (1406-1470), the Grosse Tour incorporates a smaller tower belonging to the original castle built in 1424. The oak frame supporting the roof is the original one (15th century). One can still admire the ingenious arrangement of the beams. This structure is reminiscent of the framework of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, which unfortunately went up in smoke. The skills of the master carpenters of the Middle Ages are indeed indisputable.
