Before hosting the Sedan castle, the site welcomed the Benedictine Saint-Martin priory, dependent on the abbey of Mouzon. Its foundations still stand in the courtyard of the fortress. The chapel of the castle has occupied the same room since the beginning of the 16th century. It constitutes the upper part of the Ogival pavilion. Ten Gothic columns stand against the sidewalls and the apse, and the lowered and ribbed vault is typical of the Flamboyant Gothic style. Following the conversion to Calvinism of Prince Henri-Robert de la Marck (1539-1574), the chapel served as a Protestant oratory.
