The capital of the Newfoundlanders

From the 19th to the 20th century, some 2,300 sailors made the fortune of Fécamp by going cod fishing off the coast of Newfoundland (Taqamkuk in Micmac dialect) in Canada. These seasonal sailors set off for 8 to 9 months in the icy waters of the region where fishing intensified, going from 150,000 tons (1940) to 810,000 tons (1968). The species declined from 1970, and Canada imposed drastic quotas. In 1987, the Dauphin, the last Newfoundlander, left Fécamp for a final fishing trip before being disarmed.
