When the chameleon has spotted its prey, it targets it with both eyes simultaneously, faces it, and slightly opens the mouth leaving a small part of the tongue protrude. After a time varying from a few seconds to several minutes, it propels its tongue forward at a speed superior to 16ft/s (5m/s).
