Cette pièce fut à l'origine la chambre de la princesse Caroline Murat, puis celle de son frère l'Empereur Napoléon Ier.
En 1860 c'estson neveu, l'Empereur Napoléon III, qui transforma le chambre en bibliothèque.
Certains présidents de la République y installèrent leur bureau (Sadi Carnot, Félix Faure et Vincent Auriol). d'autres y posèrent pour leur photo offcielle (de Gaulle, Pompidou, Mitterrand et Sarkozy).
C'est Valéry Giscard d'Estaing qui lui rend sa forme d'origine.
