The abbey library and its decor by Odilon Redon

Nestled above the cloister of the Abbey of Fontfroide is an astonishing library. The room is usually closed to the public but is sometimes open for visits in small groups of up to twenty people. Those reduced visits are to preserve this very fragile and intimate room. Indeed, the abbey library is adorned with a decoration painted by Odilon Redon, a French Symbolist painter from the end of the 19th century. He created this decor as a gift for his friend Gustave Fayet who bought the abbey in 1908.
