The church of Mont Sainte-Odile, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1840. It was elevated to the rank of pontifical basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. The bottom of the nave seems Romanesque, while the five windows are Gothic in style and date from the 15th century. The bell tower was added, as well as the adjoining turret, in 1923. The imposing statue of Saint Odile extends her arm over the plain of Alsace, which she has been protecting for nearly 1,300 years.
