The Roman civil basilica of Alésia

0
The monumental center of the Gallo-Roman city of Alésia was unearthed from 1905, with the first campaigns carried out under the direction of the Société des Sciences Historiques et Naturelles (Society of Historical and Natural Sciences) of Semur-en-Auxois. The Roman civil basilica visible here extends at the heart of a complex that includes the theater, the temple and its sacred area, the forum, and the monument to Ucuetis. It consists of a large rectangular room, the north and south ends of which include semicircular apses. To the west, a large axial room whose back wall is in an arc probably corresponds to the curia. On either side of this room, smaller rooms were to be allocated to the various public services. On the east side, the facade overlooked an intermediate courtyard that isolated it from the forum.
