Expedition on Arctic fast ice under the spring sun. Canadian Arctic Archipelago's bay and channels are completely ice-covered for most of the year. The fast ice zone refers to areas where ice is anchored to the shoreline. It forms early in the winter, melts every year and can contain pressure ridges and keels. A shear zone separates the fast ice of the perennial and central pack ice which is in constant motion.
