Nicknamed the Versailles of the horse, the Haras National du Pin was built by order of King Louis XIV in a green setting of more than 2,470 acres (1,000 ha) in the commune of Pin-au-Haras in the Orne department. Its construction from 1715 to 1736 was led by the architects Robert de Cotte (1656-1735), Pierre le Mousseux, and Jacques-Jules Gabriel. Robert de Cotte became the first architect to the King after the death of Jules-Hardouin Mansart in 1708. He participated in major royal projects, including that of the chapel of Versailles, before drawing up the plans for the main building of the Haras National du Pin. Pierre le Mousseux executed his drawings and then collaborated with Jacques-Jules Gabriel, the King's first architect from 1735.
