Les constructions de l'Homme sont parfois mises à l'épreuve de la nature mais peu en subissent autant que la RN2 de l'Île de la Réunion. Cette route, aussi appelée Route des Laves, traverse le couloir de lave du volcan. A chaque éruption majeure elle est endommagée pour être refaite inlassablement.
