Metz Cathedral is adorned with 1.60 acres (6,500 m²) of stained glass. The rose window on its western facade has monumental proportions. It is 92 ft high (28 m) and 42 ft wide (13m), ranking it among the tallest in European's cathedrals. Crafted in 1384 by Hermann of Münster, a master glassmaker from Westphalia, the rose consists of a star with eight lobes divided into two parts. Its iconography brings together the Apostles and symbols of the Old Testament. Above it, three small arches depict Christ on the Cross, the Virgin, and Saint John.
