The support tool of the blacksmith's work

The anvil is the necessary support for the hot shaping of the metal by the blacksmith. It can weigh up to several hundred kilograms. Large anvils, like the one visible in the forge of the medieval construction site of Guédelon, are generally installed on a wooden block taken from a tree trunk to which they are fixed. The conical and pyramidal points called horns that end them are used to shape the objects being created. The quality of their manufacture by a fire welding process of several elements as well as of the metal that compose them is recognizable by the crystalline sound they produce.
