The Cagou of New Caledonia (Rhynochetos jubatus), lives only on the ground, whether it hunts or reproduces itself, it does not fly. The couple stay together for life and only lay one egg per year. The nest is on the ground and the chick has reddish plumage to blend in with the leaves. It does not take its final gray-blue color until around two years old. The male and the female look alike. Only their song is slightly different (longer in the male). It looks like the yelp of a young puppy. It opens its wings and inflates its crest of feathers when it wants to be intimidating or during courtship.
