In the Middle Ages, Riquewihr's protection against artillery fire became necessary. From 1291, the city was endowed with two rows of rectangular ramparts. They were dominated by the High Gate Tower (Dolder), the Thieves Tower, and the Obertor (High Gate). The location of its former drawbridge is still visible today. Riquewihr is also home to the oldest portcullis in Europe, all made of wood. It was built a few years before the Tower of London's. Between the beams of the drawbridge is the coat of arms of the Counts of Württemberg.
