Wood is an essential element of Alsatian houses, like in Riquewihr. It constitutes their framework, floors, stairs, and the structure of their internal and external walls. Once the framework is completed, the chimney is built, and the gaps are filled with masonry or cobs. Usually, a cellar is added on the street side, directly under the living room. The courtyard porch of a traditional Alsatian house has two doors: a carriage door and a barrier.
