Rurutu Island, the northernmost of the Austral Islands

First mentioned by the British explorer James Cook in 1769, Rurutu remained an independent kingdom until 1889, when the Australs entered the French protectorate. But it is only since 1946 and its change of status from colony to Overseas Territory, that the French laws are applied in Rurutu, one of the most austral islands in French Polynesia.
