A city hall on a former gate's site

Until spring 1789, when it was demolished, the old Town Hall was in the center of Riquewihr. Advancing to the middle of the street, arches left a wide passage under part of the building where the market was held. A fountain adorned this sector of the city. The present city hall, in neoclassical style, was built in 1809, roughly on the site of the Lower Gate outpost. The narrow passage that crosses the building recalls the function of the old fortified gate, both defensive and principal access to the city.
