The heir of Charles Quint

Emperor Wilhelm II decided to renovate the ruins of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle in 1900. The keep was the first part of the fortress to be restored. It was to be the symbol of the power of the German Empire. The imperial eagle, with outstretched wings, was attached to its summit in 1906, where it still stands today. When the architect Ebhardt restored the castle, he also undertook the reconstruction of the gate, of which only the base remained. He had the coat of arms of Wilhelm II carved above those of Emperor Charles Quint, as the Kaiser claimed to be his heir.
