The population of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is estimated at over 500 inhabitants in the medieval times and the 1826 census still indicated 526 inhabitants. It began to drop during the 19th century, falling to 377 inhabitants in 1859. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was no more than 248 inhabitants (1901) then only 93 inhabitants in 2004 and 82 in 2018. The 19th century rural exodus is linked to the construction of the Burgundy Canal and reservoirs between 1822 and 1838 followed by the commissioning of new railway lines from 1850.
