The evolution of the Vieux Salins
0
0
Attested as early as the 10th century but probably even much older, the Vieux Salins of Hyères are made up of different small salt farms. They were operated by the city of Genoa in the Middle Ages and then by a multitude of independent salt workers at the end of the site's medieval golden era. These structures with complex architecture were later brought together in a single production unit in 1856 by the Salins du Midi company before being put to sleep following the takeover of the Salin des Pesquiers in 1967. Back to production in 1984, the Vieux Salins permanently ceased their activity in 1992, three years before the Salin des Pesquiers.
