The Escalier Daru

It is the monumental setting that leads to the Victory of Samothrace. The Escalier Daru (Daru Staircase) was designed by Hector-Martin Lefuel between 1855 and 1857. In 1850, Napoleon III transformed the Louvre and had a new wing built for the museum. Hector Lefuel designed a set of six large staircases serving four different directions. The Daru Staircase is lit by domes oriented from west to east. The fall of the Second Empire in 1870 put an end to the work. It was Edmond Guillaume who completed the staircase in 1882.
