The presumed hermitage of Mary Magdalene

The Sainte-Baume sanctuary was erected around the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine cave in the cliffs of the Sainte-Baume massif in the municipality of Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume in the Var department. This natural cave carved out by erosion would have served as a hermitage for Mary Magdalene (3-103) after she evangelized Provence. She would have settled there in 45 AD after having landed at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer from Palestine and evangelized Marseille with Lazare and would have spent the rest of her life in the cave. Her relics were buried in the crypt of the Sainte Marie-Madeleine basilica in Saint-Maximin.
