Less expensive than a dyke, beach groynes, such as the Dupont-de-L'Eure groyne in Houlgate on the Côte Fleurie (Flowery Coast), are used to limit sea erosion. They are concrete constructions or can also be made of piles of rocks placed in a solid structure of large wooden beams. Houlgate beach has five, created from rock and concrete. They were implanted on its western part from 1900 onwards following a storm that, in 1898, destroyed the Dupont-de-l'Eure villa built in the 19th century for his daughter by the eponymous politician.
