The Tour de Constance, built in 1242 to defend the city of Aigues-Mortes, has an interior defense organized around three gates. The first one has thick leaves and a portcullis, the second conceals the entrance to the staircase leading to the upper floors, and the third gate closes with a lock and a crossbar. This unique defensive structure of Aigues-Mortes notably housed Protestant women imprisoned from 1717 onwards. The last ones were not released until 1769.
