The 1960s and 1970s, marked by strong economic growth, benefited the road network. Facing this situation, the SNCF joined forces with other companies to compete with cars. Fast, modern, and comfortable trains started crisscrossing Europe: the Trans Europ Express. In the 1970s, the SNCF's research department worked on adapting aerial technology to railway equipment. The national company decided to launch a railcar equipped with a helicopter turbine. Some models of the turbotrain are displayed in the Cité du Train in Mulhouse.
