Hippos mate in water. The female can even be totally immersed, and she surfaces to breathe from time to time. After a gestation period of 8 months, she gives birth to a single calf. It is born in shallow water and its mother nurses it underwater. The calf has to surface approximatively every 40 seconds to breath.
