Municipal washhouses replaced streams and fountains in the 19th century in order to limit the spread of epidemics by creating specific places dedicated to washing laundry. The installations were quickly perfected, with roofs for protection against bad weather, raised basins to spare the backs of the washerwomen, and even double basins for washing and rinsing. The washhouses have not only improved personal hygiene but also provided an essential place for women to socialize.
