Today the administrative center of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, Perpignan has a rich history and cultural heritage. Some 120 miles (192 km) from Barcelona, it is home to almost 120,000 inhabitants known as Perpignanais. Originally the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, the city was not annexed by the Kingdom of France until 1659. Today, the Catalan city is the thirty-first in France by population and the seventh on the French Mediterranean coast.
